"Rock ‘N’ Roll Is Alive! (And It Lives In Minneapolis)" served as the B-side for the single "Gold," which was the second commercial single from "The Gold Experience," available globally. Additionally, in 1996, the track featured in the television movie "Love 4 One Another."

Basic tracking occurred on September 12, 1995, at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota, coinciding with the release of "I Hate U" as a single. It featured an audience chant, "Rock 'N' roll is alive! And it lives in Minneapolis," from the September 9, 1995, show at Paisley Park Studios. The song debuted on KDWB-FM radio in Minneapolis the next day. An instrumental version, which included the audience chants and the DJ's voiceover from the original broadcast, premiered on KDWB-FM two days after that.

The song was a direct response to Lenny Kravitz's "Rock And Roll Is Dead" from his 1995 album "Circus," which was also released as a single. It garnered press attention upon release. At a listening party for "The Gold Experience," where this song was featured, a lyric sheet distributed to the attendees concluded with the acknowledgment, "Thanks Lenny, call me in Minneapolis."

The song was issued as the A-side of a posthumous 7-inch vinyl given to all attendees at the Minnesota Timberwolves NBA basketball game at Minneapolis' Target Center against the Miami Heat on April 5, 2019, featuring Calhoun Square on the B-side. The single was also released digitally on the same day.
