November 30, 1973 - Wizzard

Wizzard release the single "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday" b/w "Roy Rob Roy's Nightmare (A Bit More H. A.)"

Like many Wizzard tracks, the song was written and produced by the band's lead, Roy Wood, who was previously with The Move and a co-founder of Electric Light Orchestra. Despite its enduring popularity, the song peaked at number four on the UK Singles Chart, where it stayed for four weeks from December 1973 to January 1974. It was outperformed by Slade's "Merry Xmas Everybody" for the 1973 Christmas Number 1 spot, which topped the charts for five weeks across December 1973 and January 1974.

Roy Wood performs the lead vocals, while the Suedettes, along with Stockland Green School's first-year choir, provide backing vocals for the single. The original single's sleeve credits "Miss Snob and Class 3C" for "Additional noises." To evoke a winter ambiance, the basic track, recorded in August 1973, was produced in a studio adorned with Christmas decorations by engineer Steve Brown, who also lowered the air conditioning to its coldest setting. Wood donned a woolen hat from the lost and found, and schoolchildren were transported from the Midlands to London by bus during the autumn half-term to contribute their vocals.

When the single was released, Wizzard's contract with EMI was nearing its end. Warner Bros., who had just secured a deal with the band for their upcoming releases, pressed promotional copies. It was later realized that EMI legally owned the rights to the track, leading to the cessation of Warner Bros.' pressings. Consequently, the record was released under the Harvest label, retaining the original picture sleeve. In a UK television special on ITV in December 2012, the British public ranked the song as the second favorite Christmas song, just after "Fairytale of New York," in The Nation's Favourite Christmas Song.
