Tickets for Prince's 1990 UK tour sold out within hours of going on sale. Initially only the first three dates were advertised in the popular press, with extra dates being held in reserve in order to cope with the expected demand for tickets. However, demand quickly surpassed even the highest of estimates and the originally planned seven nights at Wembley and two at the Brimingham NEC were extended to 15 nights at Wembley (a new record for the number of performances by one artist), four nights at the NEC and one night at Maine Road football stadium in an attempt to accommodate fans. As tickets went on sale for other European concerts, they sold out immediately.


How can an artist who is frequently portrayed in the popular press around the world as not quite the full shilling command such an enormous turn-out for his concerts? Why is Prince the musicians' choice of musician? Why is there a large underground following of fans throughout the world, ranging in ages from children to


grandparents? Why do art students/designers/ bands/musicians try to emulate Prince? Could it simply be because Prince is an innovative, prolific, hardworking, talented, respected musician and an absolutely spectacular live performer? Could it be that the multi-talented Prince really does have to be seen to be believed and that once seen in concert, further shows are a must for fans??


Controversy the only Prince fan network acknowledged by Prince himself - has been established almost four years. It was started primarily to gather accurate information about Prince and his activities (there was little serious coverage available in the press at the time). The result is Controversy Magazine the glossy, bi-monthly fanzine which is packed with facts and photos of Prince and associated artists.


Many fan magazines bite the dust without ever getting to know their subject. One would have expected someone of the stature of Prince major intermational artist, renowned for not a
