The band's third studio album featured "The Best Years of Our Lives" as its lead single, penned by Harley and produced jointly by Harley and Alan Parsons. In February 1975, the track topped the UK chart and was awarded a gold certification by the British Phonographic Industry in October 2021. It remained in the Top 50 for nine weeks and, by 2015, had sold more than 1.5 million copies globally. This song ranks among the most frequently played in British broadcasting history..

Over 120 artists have recorded cover versions of the song, with notable renditions by Duran Duran and Erasure. However, Harley mentioned that his preferred cover was by the Wedding Present.
