This was Quatro's second and last solo number one single in the UK, remaining at the top of the chart for two weeks in February 1974. As noted by ukcharts.20m.com, it took 13 years and 26 days for her to achieve another number one in the UK, this time as a member of the Ferry Aid band with a charity rendition of the Lennon–McCartney song "Let It Be."

"Devil Gate Drive," written and produced by Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman, became the "ChinniChap" team's second consecutive number one hit after "Tiger Feet" by Mud. The song was re-recorded as the opening track for Quatro's 1995 album "What Goes Around." In 1987, it was featured as the B-side to the re-release when "Can the Can" achieved minor success.

A vocal sample was utilized in Orbital's "Bigpipe Style." This song appeared in season 5 of the show Happy Days, specifically in the episode titled "Fonzie and Leather Tuscadero, Part II." Suzi Quatro portrayed the character Leather Tuscadero in the series.
